Keynote at the ÖGfMM Conference in the Mozarteum in Salzburg

On April 10th 2026, Heather O’Donnell gave a keynote at the ÖGfMM Conference at the Mozarteum in Salzburg on artistic identity, excellence, and the psychological costs of exclusivity in professional music training.

Drawing on psychodynamic and systemic perspectives and her work with musicians, the talk examined how narrowly defined artistic identities can become both a source of achievement and a point of vulnerability, particularly when self-worth becomes overly tied to performance and external validation. It invited educators and practitioners to consider how training environments might foster excellence without demanding total self-identification, making space for broader, more sustainable forms of artistic development.

Am 10. April 2026 hielt Heather O’Donnell eine Keynote auf der ÖGfMM-Konferenz am Mozarteum in Salzburg zum Thema künstlerische Identität, Exzellenz und die psychologischen Kosten von Ausschließlichkeit in der professionellen Musikausbildung.

Ausgehend von psychodynamischen und systemischen Perspektiven sowie ihrer Arbeit mit Musikerinnen und Musikern beleuchtete der Vortrag, wie eng definierte künstlerische Identitäten zugleich Quelle von Leistung und besondere Vulnerabilität sein können – insbesondere dann, wenn Selbstwert übermäßig an Performance und äußere Anerkennung gekoppelt ist. Die Keynote lud Pädagoginnen, Pädagogen und Fachkollegen dazu ein, darüber nachzudenken, wie Ausbildungsumfelder Exzellenz fördern können, ohne totale Identifikation zu verlangen, und stattdessen Raum für breitere, nachhaltigere Formen künstlerischer Entwicklung schaffen.
