About Chie Mukai:

I grew up in Japan. At the age of 15, I decided to devote my time more intensively to dancing by enrolling in the Walnut Hill School for the Arts in Boston, an intensive pre-college program for aspiring artists.

I later went to the Boston Conservatory, where I learned a variety of dance styles: Jazz, African, Modern, Contemporary Ballet. My body got to know many differet movement patterns. However, having scoliosis caused many injuries. One severe injury led to a major surgery. I couldn't dance for 8 months, having had two big screws inside of my foot connecting to my ligament. During this time, in minus 20℃ freezing cold Boston winter time weather, I was super depressed and I seriously thought about quitting dance and giving up on the college degree. However, one of my teachers was a certified trainer for Alexander Technique. She taught me how important it is to get to know one’s body and to give it time for healing processes. After recovering from the surgery, I began exploring GYROTONIC® and GYROKINESIS®. As a result, I experienced no more problems with dancing and injuries. I entered the arts world of New York City as a freelance  dancer. I've worked for music videos, performed on stage, danced at museums. Despite tough rehearsals combined with a busy schedule, my body kept strong. I attribute this to my experiences with learning and teaching GYROTONIC® and GYROKINESIS®.
