Uprightness and breath control for singers

Sonja M. Mertens

Being dynamically well-positioned for the stage, whether as a soloist, in a choir with band or ensemble through awareness and anchoring of one's own supportive experiences

  • Activation of the "control space" below the navel through exercises from Dispokinesis and Spiral Dynamics applied to the voice in jazz and pop.

  • In combination with (choral) voice training according to Estill Voice Training as well as stage presentation

  • Workshop and individual work on repertoire

From Dispokinesis (loosely translated as readiness to move) and from Spiral Dynamics (spiral-like screwing of the musculature) we derive exercises that allow the (sound) body individualized and permeable stability that can always be accessed from below. This allows the upper extremities as well as the neck, head and respiratory organs to move freely. We can apply stylistically appropriate functional figures from the Estill Voice Training System (in jazz and pop for sob, falsetto, twang and belting). We also find reliable support for the stage situation in dealing with stage fright by activating the "control room" of the pelvis and lower abdomen.

The training includes self-experienced and self-implemented exercises from the floor to sitting upright and can be applied directly to individual passages from songs.
