Christoph Mayer

Christoph Mayer received his violin training at the conservatories in Munich and Cologne and with Sergey Fatkulin. An intensive study of historical performance practice led to participation in most of the renowned German baroque orchestras, not least in the ensemble "musica antiqua köln", with whom he also performed chamber music for several years in numerous concerts and many recordings, some of them award-winning.

His high reputation as a chamber musician is evidenced by performances at international music festivals such as the Styriarte Graz, the Schwetzingen Festival and Klang & Raum Irsee, as well as in major concert halls such as London's Wigmore Hall, the Tonhalle Zurich, the Concertgebouw Amsterdam, Lincoln Center and "The Frick Collection" New York or the Berlin Philharmonic.

In addition to numerous radio recordings and CD recordings in larger formations, Mayer has participated in many chamber music recordings, including with "musica antiqua köln", "Schuppanzigh-Quartett", "SCALA köln", "Musica ad Rhenum" and "SPIRIT & PLEASURE".

He became interested in conducting at an early age, which led to many engagements as a choir conductor throughout Europe at the age of 18.

He received his training in orchestral conducting from 2003 with Bruno Weil, who has enjoyed international success not least with his groundbreaking interpretations of music from the Viennese Classical period. In him, he found an outstanding teacher and mentor.

Christoph Mayer is a sought-after lecturer on historical performance practice at courses and seminars. Among other things, he taught at the International Handel Academy in Karlsruhe and coached at the Opera in Zurich. Between 2004 and 2016, he traveled to Nizhny Novgorod (formerly Gorky), Russia, as an "ambassador of historical performance practice" in cooperation with the Goethe-Institut Moscow, among others. In 2006 he was appointed honorary professor for his master classes and seminars at the State Conservatory "Mikhail Glinka". Meanwhile he has a similar partnership with the Georgian State Chamber Orchestra GEORGIAN SINFONIETTA Tbilisi.

After many years in the profession, he took technique lessons with violin pedagogue Sergey Fatkulin, whose logical, highly effective violin technique based on simple physical principles fascinated him. Since then, Christoph Mayer has been increasingly involved in violin didactics as a pedagogue.

Funded by the GVL as part of NEUSTART KULTUR, he is currently working on combining music physiology and technique coaching for high strings.
